Opioids are drugs with analgesic properties that are used primarily for pain relief. Opioids can also cause a feeling of euphoria (a "high,") which makes them more likely to be used inappropriately.
Street drugs in Canada are now contaminated with potent opioids, such as fentanyl, which cause an alarmingly high number of overdoses and deaths. Fake pills containing unknown amounts of fentanyl are being manufactured. In addition, fentanyl is sometimes accidentally introduced into drugs made illegally when surfaces or equipment become contaminated with the substance. Fentanyl cannot be seen, tasted, or smelled, and just a few grains are enough to cause death.
